Sheep River - Toby Creek Canyon

back

Bluerock along the Sheep River
It was a grey and cloudy day, but with some hesitation we decided to see if we could beat the rain.
It was a tough decision on what and how many layers to
wear on this ride. The clouds were looking pretty heavy.

Roy's choice of clothing included wool
socks, overboots and tights.

Ryan scouts out our first river crossing.
At this point we still  have dry feet and are not to keen
to get wet.

Ursula and Mike debating about the wisdom of going any
further. Turns out they made the right decision and headed
for the cars.

To heck with wet feet, Carol rides across the creek.

Jack takes the safe route and walks the creek.

Ryan checking to see if he can clear this creek.

The clouds reached saturation point and we took cover
in the trees. This wouldn't be the first dash for cover.
As the rain got more serious we finally admitted defeat
and headed back.

Now that everyone was soaking wet they just plunged across the creeks.
Jim, Jack, Roy and Ryan make the crossing.

So much for our attempt at staying dry and clean. The trail had turned into a mud pit on the way home. On the way out we made every attempt to go around the mud holes. There wasn't any point on the way back so we just charged through everything. What would their mothers think?

It was a fun day even if it was short and muddy.

Toby Creek Canyon, Invermere
July 2nd, 2004

It's the July long weekend and we're off for 3 days of riding. This is also the weekend of the Sugoi Dirt Bike Series for women at Panorama Ski Hill.  Andrea, Barb, Carol, Inge and Ursula were all taking part in the dirt camp. We were too busy learning skills and riding to take pictures during the camp. We did have an awesome day at Toby Creek with the fellas, Bob, Kim, Roy, Ryan and Werner before the camp started though.

It was a hot and beautiful day as we prepared to explore
and ride Toby Creek.

No more than two minutes into the ride and we've already
lost Roy and Bob.

Kim lead us through a series of trails in search of the half pipe and roller coaster. Lots of ups and downs and winding trails.

Ryan on the half pipe. It took us a while to find the half pipe
and roller coaster, but it was sure worth it. It was so fun we
had to go back and ride it again.

This was the happy Roy before he smashed his rear
derailleur on a tough root and had shifting problems
for the rest of the season.

The group seems to be having a good chuckle over Roy's dilemma.

What's wrong with this picture. Roy puts some muscle into
bending the derailleur back into place. The hanger
was pointing 180 degrees the wrong way!

With the use of a few tools, a big rock and lots of
advice, Roy amazingly gets his bike working again.
He was able to carry on with the rest of the days ride.

We rode up to the old train trestle before heading back down along the Canyon.
It was a long day, but a great day.

Here's the results of Carol's effort on Day 2
of the camp. Just an unlucky break!
